David Mackenzie Comments on "Perfect Sense" Screening at Sundance Film Festival

With the Sundance Film Festival set to take place next month, the press machine is now cranking up. As such, we are lucky today to see a new comment from Sigma's own David Mackenzie on his latest film "Perfect Sense" which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Via Trust Nordisk:

David Mackenzie, who directed the award-winning HALLAM FOE (2007), is delighted about being a part of the festival: “It's wonderful to be having the World Premiere of Perfect Sense at Sundance, in the company of the kind of independent, trailblazing, edgy films that the festival is famous for”.

There are also two new description of the film (which runs 90 mins) now online for us. First, from the Trust Nordisk piece which reads:

"PERFECT SENSE tells the story about Susan, who is a scientist searching for answers to important questions. So important that she has given up on other things, including love - until she meets Michael, a talented chef. Suddenly everything starts to change. While Susan and Michael are experiencing new and unforeseen depths of feeling, all around the world people are also beginning to feel strange - something is affecting the emotions. Susan and Michael find themselves embarking on a sensual adventure, experiencing head-spinning, stomach-tightening moments of pure connection. Is this because they are falling in love or is it because the world is falling apart? A life affirming look at what it means to love and be loved in these turbulent times."
As first reported here on this blog, Perfect Sense will debut on January 24, with the Sundance Film Festival website now updated with this date, as well as a week's worth of screenings; plenty of chances for attendees and others to catch the film at various events in both Park City and in Salt Lake City (last screening date, Sun, Jan. 30th.) There is also a second description of the new film starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green at the site, which reads as follows:

When Susan (Eva Green), an epidemiologist, reemerges from an affair gone sour, she encounters a peculiar patient—a Glasgow truck driver who experienced a sudden, uncontrollable crying fit. Now he is calm, but he has lost his sense of smell. Susan learns there are 11 cases like him in Glasgow, 7 in Aberdeen, 5 in Dundee, and 18 in Edinburgh. In fact, Great Britain has 100 cases, with additional ones reported in France, Belgium, Italy, and Spain, and they all appeared in the last 24 hours. Although Susan’s encounter with Michael (Ewan McGregor), a local restaurant chef, holds the promise of new love, the world is about to change dramatically. People across the globe begin to suffer strange symptoms, affecting the emotions, then the senses.

Indie Wire's The Playlist has a short recap of the film online today as well, noting again the name change etc, as well as a brief mention of David's other new film "You Instead" that will premiere later in 2011. Finally, big kudos and thanks to very cool Jon & co at ReelScotland for not only the shoutout mention in their piece on Perfect Sense for Sundance, but for also for the credit on info which very rare these days heh, and much appreciated.

Bonus: On this blog we were able to see some wonderful filming photos (see my coverage at this link), but one truly excellent photo of note can be found on Flickr from "one day alive" (he also shot Colin I think?), showing this lovely black & white capture of a gaffer on the "Perfect Sense." You can see here lovely face at the top, but I really love the whole photo for a close up shows her tattered belt, clapboard bearing David mackenzie's name sense info etc, and her also sporting lots of tape :) Just an ace photo, so so well done, love it!

David Mackenzie's "Perfect Sense" with Ewan McGregor, Eva Green to Screen at Sundance Film Festival!

At long last, I am thrilled to confirm those rumors: David Mackenzie's "Perfect Sense" with Ewan McGregor & Eva Green will indeed screen at the Sundance Film Festival next month. YAY!

Previously known as "The Last Word" the newest motion picture from Sigma Films' own David Mackenzie will premiere at the US festival next month, with a tentative date set for JANUARY 24. I will update with more, ticket info etc as soon as the official Sundance website formally releases that info.

Rumor Alert: A Perfect Sense for Sundance Festival and David Mackenzie

oooh here's an interesting report today...ION Cinema has their predictions for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival now online, and included their wish and hope that David Mackenzie's "Perfect Sense" starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green might debut at the vaunted event early next year. Quotage:
It used to go by another title, it looked pegged for a 2010 release, so there are big question marks with Perfect Sense. Logically a double dip in Sundance and Berlin would occur, but that depends on where David MacKenzie is at with his current project, In the Park. MacKenzie was actually in Park City in 2009 with Spread - the Ashton Kutcher sex dramedy. Will Sundance play host to a romantic drama featuring Ewan McGregor, Eva Green, Connie Nielsen, Ewen Bremner, Stephen Dillane and Alastair Mackenzie? If so, we can expect a Premieres category announcement.

This oracle thinks that, while this is just a rumor and speculation, a turn at Sundance makes absolutely perfect sense oooh ;P for what is surely going to be an absolutely perfectly enjoyable film; what do you think?

Also Citadel is currently in early production phase now based at Film City Glasgow, with shooting due to start in a few weeks-more on that new film from producer Brian Coffey and director Ciaran Foy soon!

Sigma's own Colin Kennedy will be making his way to (a hopefully sunny and warm!) LA this weekend as his multi award-winning short film I LOVE LUCI is in competition at the AFI and will screen THIS WEEKEND, SUNDAY Nov 7 at 1:15

While news has been errm erratic on this front *sigh*, Bankside films today (as seen in Screendaily) announced they have taken on David Mackenzie's other big new film due out next year too, now called "You Instead." I will have much much more on this soon, sorry thats the best I can do for now, but hang in there!

Finally, speaking of Bankside, Outcast (blogged about here previously and filmed in part in Scotland) will see a US release by the Indomina Group. No word when, but hopefully in 2011 too. Outcast stars the uber fantastic James Nesbitt, Kate Dickie (Donkeys, Red Road) and James Cosmo (kick-ass star of many many wonderful films including Sigma's current hit Donkeys).

Composer Max Richter on David Mackenzie's "Perfect Sense" film

As some of you have emailed, yes news here regarding Sigma has fallen upon some unforseen turns sorry :( and now slow times. As such, thought it might be of interest to point out an older yet interesting interview with musician Max Richter on the score and theme he wrote for David Mackenzie's upcoming "Perfect Sense" (formerly "Last Word."). While those at Sigma are hard at work preparing for a hopefully soon release-Colin has been hard at work making the poster- Max Richter has granted several interviews of late (one appearing in Clash magazine this month), and it is in this piece on Tracks & Fields where the composer gives us a tidbit on what we can expect. Quotage:

M: I’m just finishing a film for David Mackenzie which has been a really nice collaboration. We’ve been shuffling it around for the past few months, and having the chance to think about the material a bit more deeply has been great. It’s a string score with a lot of grit and electronics all over it. The film is pretty heavy duty – it’s basically about the end of the world.

Cannnnet Hear a Whisper on Last Word

Well the much ballyhooed announcement of films at Cannes this year seem to omit much of Scotland, again. bleh! The whole of UK and US too for that matter have a limited showing (good films but still). Notable of course to me was the omission of David Mackenzie's The Last Word. alas. However ever optimistic fan I am, am hoping this means they still might announce later or more like likely, the movie might screen at Edinburgh which would be fab.u.lous (or London/Venice/Toronto/one of ten trillion out there) so hope remains!

There was a brief mention of Last Word today by means of a new interview with the star, Ewan McGregor who spoke about working with his uncle on the film. Quotage:

Since completing The Ghost, Ewan has been able to fulfil an ambition to work with his uncle Denis Lawson, whose exploits in the original Star Wars movies inspired his young nephew back in Crieff, Scotland.“I love him to death and he is the only person I ever turn to if I need to speak about work.

“I went to start work on The Last Word with David Mackenzie, who I made Young Adam with. I play a chef and there was a nice relationship with the owner of the restaurant. I could just see me and my uncle in those parts together. I suggested it as many times as I felt was polite because it had to be David’s decision.“It was just lovely to be on set with him and playing two Scottish characters in Scotland.”

A Tweet of News on Progress with The Last Word

Sometimes no news is good news, but there is nothing better than an unexpected, peep, word, a note, a brief update out of the blue on something you've been anxious about...in this case several tweets about progress on David Mackenzie's upcoming The Last Word!

Part of the original Trifecta of super at Film City Glasgow (along with Sigma Films and Serious Facilities) I was thrilled to discover the excellent Savalas Sound is now on Twitter,woot! and better yet, they've updated on their progress as the highly anticipated film from Sigma and David is now well into post-production. Of note, listen up Ewan fans ;) came the following:

For those of us who are really interested in how they actually make quality films, it was also with grateful eyes I read these other pieces of news:

"We're recording foley for David Mackenzie's new feature The Last Word. It's mostly salmon slapping, watermelon munching and lemon twisting....Today at Savalas, Welcome to Lagos nears it's conclusion and the Last Word dialogue edit, foley and sound design continue at a frantic pace."

Buzz Continues for David Mackenzie's Last Word and Cannes

With the change of seasons comes fresh rumor and speculation regarding the approaching Cannes Film Festival, with mentions again of David Mackenzie's "The Last Word," starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green. The newest Sigma Films production, on many of the years most anticipated lists, has been mentioned before about a possible screening at the vaunted film festival in France, with the Herald today also citing the possible appearance of three Scottish films including Last Word as well as the superb Peter Mullan and his new film Neds as well as Kevin MacDonald's Eagle of the Ninth. Full quotage including comments from a rep from Sigma are as follows:

Across the globe film-makers will spend the next month finishing movies in the hope of being selected for Cannes. The trio of Scottish films are all in post-production. Probably the tightest turnaround will be for The Last Word. A “story about two people who fall in love just as the world starts falling apart”, it is set in a city where a pandemic is causing people to lose their senses. The movie was filmed in Glasgow, co-produced with Scotland’s Sigma Films, and was supported by Scottish Screen.

When contacted, Sigma Films staff were cautious about aiming for a berth at Cannes. They have just finished the editing process.“There is a long way to go,” said a spokesman. “Whether or not we’re going to be there is not something we are working towards. We are working towards finishing the film. It’s nice that people think we may appear in Cannes, but we won’t know until the next four weeks what is going to happen.”

Ewan McGregor and David Mackenzie have pedigree in Cannes together. Their last collaboration Young Adam, a tale of grimy sex and betrayal on the Clyde, was an official selection in 2003...

“We are absolutely delighted that three Scottish films, two supported by Scottish Screen, are being talked about for Cannes,” said Carole Sheridan, head of talent and creativity.“These are great films by fantastic film-makers. They all deserve to be there and we wish them all very good luck. This could indeed be one of the best years yet for Scottish films.“It is an indication of the flourishing and maturing film industry in Scotland that our films are increasing their overseas presence.”

Video: Film and Glasgow for the Future

Recently there have been several tidbits of news regarding the film industry in Scotland, notably the growing importance of Glasgow as a centre for the industry. Following on the heels of the much hyped Gerry Butler as Ambassador for the GFO, but with little detail on what exactly this actually meant and what would tangibly be done, it seems last week the Evening Times gave us a glimpse of the future. The future, one year ahead that is as the paper stated "‘Glasgow: Cinema City’ project, is currently being developed by the organisers of Glasgow Film Festival and will be launched at next year’s event.It will promote the city’s calendar of film events and historic movie links and sell Glasgow to visitors as “a city in love with the silver screen”.VisitScotland regional director David Adams McGilp said: “The Cinema City project is an inspired idea, uniting Glasgow’s heritage as a film-going city with its more recent reputation for cultural richness and its success establishing a popular, audience-focused film festival. We are delighted to support it.”

While we may have to wait a year to see all of this put into motion, in the meantime promotions are out there right now, including the most recent brochure from Scottish Screen which highlights many of the wonderful facilities Glasgow has to offer for filmmakers, including FILM CITY GLASGOW. Founded by the superb and Sigma Films' own Gillian Berrie, for those who have not yet seen this video, you can hear straight from Tiernan Kelly, head man at FCG here :)))



Also of interest is this clip from one of the occupants at FCG, Savalas Sound which has done so much work on Sigma Films among others.


While waiting a whole year to see this campaign begin in earnest, it's been quite encouraging to see David Mackenzie's Last Word hyped a bit of late. Many publications and blogs (including Screen Daily etc) are mentioning Last Word as a candidate for Cannes. While I personally think its a great fit, I also hope it gets to screen at Edinburgh this year too, but more importantly I just want it to sell and show on screens in the UK , US and well EVERYWHERE lol :D Poor Ewan, who has recently concluded his latest gauntlet for the ghost, was asked by a few actual thinking journalists about other films including Last Word, one reply which went as follows:

It was also nice working with David MacKenzie last year in Scotland on The Last Word, which was really low budget. Then I came back to L.A. and made a film with Mike Mills called Beginners, and that was super, super low budget. Those two films were in a way as rewarding as anything I’ve ever done. Sometimes, because there’s no budget, your filmmaking has to become much cleverer because you can’t spend a day shooting a scene from every angle. You have to shoot five scenes in a day, so the filmmaking becomes much more exciting. You have to get much more creative with the filmmaking, and that ends up on screen. There’s an energy that it produces that I really like. There are no rules to it. I’m really lucky that I’m able to dance in and out of both really.

Eva Green on David Mackenzie's Last Word "Very Dramatic"

While promoting her newest film "Cracks" the lovely Eva Green has given a new interview to the Scotsman where she speaks briefly about David Mackenzie's "The Last Word." Since it's a short mention but well worth the post here, quotage as follows:

Then comes The Last Word, the new film from Scotland's David Mackenzie. "It's a love story and the end of the world is in the background," she explains. "It's quite light, really. But what's happening is very dramatic. People lose their senses – it starts with taste, then smell, then their hearing." When we meet, Green has just finished the Glasgow-based shoot opposite Ewan McGregor (who worked with Mackenzie on 2003's Young Adam). She didn't get much of a chance to explore the city, she admits. "I haven't seen much of it, because we were shooting across five weeks. It was like shooting a TV movie! Crazy. Very intense."

Word: Two Wheelin with Ewan

LOL I luvs the internet! This fun random offbeat piece of film news popped up on the daily google crawl regarding Ewan McGregor and something he sports in David Mackenzie's Last Word film...No, it wasnt the clothing (he sports J.Lindeberg during at least one scene), rather his choice of transportation...of the two wheeled kind that is :) The kind we saw in the article here with his ride in the park!

As noted by Tokyo Fixed Gear, they "built Ewan a bike for his upcoming movie The Last Word. The movie is set in Glasgow & directed by David Mackenzie. He's riding a Gorilla Hattara frame & he's wearing clothing from Pedal.e.d, CCP & Swrve. Ewan took two, one to ride in the movie & one to add to his "collection", he told us he has a Pake (Another brand coming soon!). He seems to love all things with two wheels, when he was down in London he borrowed a bright green Cycroc & rode it round W1, would have been good to get a photo of that.If any one wants a Gorilla we will be selling their bikes in our soon to open shop. Filming has now wrapped on Sigma Films The Last Word, with a release set sometime for next year (doubt it will be ready for Berlin, but oho it sure would be grand to see that at Edinburgh, may be too earlier even then but still hope remains! ;)

Well I have a feeling this wont last long, so go quick! Three very very brief clips (rehearsals here and here, with the scene below) of Ewan McGregor and Eva Green filming a scene near Kelvingrove Park from David Mackenzie's The Last Word. As seen below, you can see the crew from Sigma, then the camera pans over as Ewan leaps out of the green car (sporting that mask) yanks his bike out the back and Eva out of the car slams door shut, then they walk into some sort of building NO DIALOGUE is heard, but still very thrilling. Each clip is very very short, but still WOOT thank you Claire!

UPDATE: You can also see this brief article from the Sunday Herald online (print copy had a few more pics) that showed a couple of extras in a scene where they are fighting over food or something in the streets. The paper noted:

Survivors seemed to be battling for last scraps of food with a wheelie bin overturned and debris strewn across Blythswood Street.

Fists were drawn as two actors fought one another on the ground.It drew a few onlookers as the camera crew captured the latest scenes for the film The Last Word. Police officers were brought in to help with traffic flow as city centre streets were affected by the filming yesterday morning.

But it left a few early-morning motorists somewhat irate, and horns were sounded when they were held up as a camera crew on a trailer headed along Bothwell Street.Officers were trying to keep the streets clear while a car sped along.

"Yes, a chunk of our own cookery stock has passed audition and will star in David Mackenzie’s “Last Word”. None of the books were available for comment at the time of writing (they’re in a box en route to the set) but a source close to the books (me, like) said they were ecstatic and looking forward to the experience. They will return to their day job here next weekend, to raise money and find a new home."

MOVIE hunk Ewan McGregor dons a chef's outfit to eye up his dish of the day - tasty co-star Eva Green.Star Wars heart-throb Ewan, 38, and Bond girl Eva, 29, were filming The Last Word on location in Glasgow yesterday.

One onlooker said: "You could say Eva looked delicious!" Meanwhile, the Scots actor has told how he was attacked by a GHOST on his 20th birthday.He said the spook left a huge burn mark on his dressing gown as he ran a bath in a shared house. Ewan added: "I was so freaked-out I left."

HAHAHAHA yea ok I wanna be drunk and write stories for the Sun yea

Check it out! Video of yesterday's massive filming on the streets of Glasgow for David Mackenzie's The Last Word. In the video below, we can see star EWAN MCGREGOR filming a scene with his bike. You can see him do several turns with the bike, the PA comes out and gets the extras going-walking about, then at the end you can clearly see director David Mackenzie walk out from behind the monitor, walk along with Ewan then stop to talk to a shop keeper extra as they prepare to do another take GREAT STUFF I LOVE MOVIE MAKING! Family Matters in David Mackenzie's "The Last Word" with Ewan McGregor

Sigma Films' "The Last Word" currently in production in Glasgow, Scotland is turning in to something of a family movie...well NOT really, but on the heels of the news that Alastair Mackenzie has a small part in the Last Word under the director of his brother David, come news of another family of sorts, Ewan McGregor and Denis Lawson. The Daily Record reports "uncle and nephew Denis Lawson and Ewan McGregor have finally achieved their ambition of acting opposite each other. The Scottish Hollywood stars are filming The Last Word, a movie about a pandemic which leaves humans without any senses. It's the first time since Ewan broke through in the 1990s that he's managed to team up with Denis. He was the man who inspired him to become an actor after watching him in Star Wars as a kid."

Noting that star Ewan McGregor was onboard early on for the film, we learn a few new nuggets about the piece which will finish soon in Glasgow. Quotage:

"We have quite a lot of scenes together because our characters not only work together, but they're friends out of work too. So it really is a big deal for us. The pair play a chef and restaurant owner, with filming taking place in Glasgow's west end.

Despite the subject matter, Denis insists The Last Word has a soft heart. He said: "People lose their sense of smell, taste and so on, right across the world. But it's a love story, with two people trying to cope with it and everything around them."

The film, which also stars Bond girl Eva Green, is directed by David Mackenzie, who worked with Ewan on Scots flick Young Adam. Denis insists there's no awkwardness working together with his nephew. He said: "People ask if there's any family tension with that sort of arrangement, but that couldn't be further from the truth."We don't operate like that. It's all very relaxed. We approach each other very much on a level playing field. We work together pretty seamlessly, with the same sort of energy and humour.

"We've been out a few times after filming, and it's nice to spend time in Glasgow again. "Ewan was on board with this film first. I've no idea whether the director always had me in mind for it, but I didn't need persuading."

Both men have had important roles in the Star Wars films. Lawson played X Wing pilot Wedge Antilles in the original three movies, with McGregor taking the part of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the more recent films."
