New Town Killers To Screen at Dinard Festival in October, Update on DVD

A few quick updates today on Richard Jobson's "New Town Killers" starring Dougray Scott, Alastair Mackenzie and James Anthony Pearson. Mr. Jobson has updated his website with the news that the film will screen next month at the Dinard Film Festival which runs October8-11th in France. Readers will recall that Sigma's Hallam Foe was a big winner at Dinard previously in 2007 so lets hope this is a good sign for good luck with NTK! :)

On a related note, previously I had posted that New Town Killers was to be released on DVD October 19th. Last month I also posted about the synopsis and the pre-orders for the disc; today there is a small update regarding the additional behind the scenes features. The audio commentary includes the director of course but also Dougray, Al, James and Liz White. who knows if this is accurate but god willing we will actually hear from Al on the DVD! Also on the disc is the aforementioned behind-the-scenes feature called "New Town Killers-The Story" According to the BBFC, this feature will run 30 minutes and 45 seconds, and will include the following:

00:19:30:02 NEW TOWN KILLERS - THE STORY (BEHIND THE SCENES)
00:03:40:06 (THE PROPOSAL) (FILM CLIP)
00:01:21:11 (THE LIST GAME) (FILM CLIP)

Scotsman Review on New Town Killers

The Scotsman has now posted their review of Richard Jobson's New Town Killers, along with a new interview with the director and star Dougray Scott. The interview naturally contains no mention of Sigma own and co-star Alastair Mackenzie, but it can be read here. As for the actual review, the latter half is worth a read:

New Town Killers is the kind of film that stretches its cast physically rather than emotionally, an action movie that almost runs out of breath. Jobson's own authorial touches include a literal cliffhanger where our hero grapples with the ledges and pipes of an Edinburgh townhouse and two encounters with a gang of Edinburgh toughs which end in greasy terror in two different ways. Less successful is a scene where two children get hold of a gun late on in the film; by this time quite a few bodies have already piled up and this pause to meditate on violence and the innocent feels unnecessary, overscored and underpowered, even if one of the kids is played by the director's daughter. Viewed as a reasonable B-movie or a so-so A-movie, it's still Jobson's most effective film to date, capitalising on Dougray Scott's smooth villainy, fluent action sequences and some nicely gothic shots of Edinburgh. It also shows a certain ethical sturdiness that seems quaint in these exploitative times; it may be hip as old boots, but in New Town Killers, no transgression goes unpunished in the end. It's only when the characters stop and deliver monologues about the class divide that the film flags – Jobson appears to have Beethoven's ear for the way people talk, and the philosophical exchanges between alpha male and his beta quarry have all the sparkle of a mortgage application. Still, provided you close your ears when anyone speaks for longer than 30 seconds, you'll have a grand time.

On a related note, Dougray Scott and his beautiful wife Claire Forlani (Sigma's Hallam Foe) were guest at tonight's Raisa Gorbachev Gala Fundraiser Ball held at Hampton Court Palace London, photo of the handsome couple ------>.

New Town Killers will be released on Thursday with a screening, Q & A and private after party featuring a performance by Isa & the Filthy Tongues. The trailer can be found here; theme song by ISA here

New Town Killers Release Draws Near with New Reviews and Large New Poster!

As a follow to the post below, there is some very good news today involving "New Town Killers," starring Dougray Scott, and Sigma Films' own Alastair Mackenzie. Reviews for the film are now pouring in, with Empire giving it four stars ("searing thriller") and Total Film the same, noting the new film from director Richard Jobson is "a spiky little speedball of caustic social commentary and guerrilla thrills." Press is starting to become more plentiful with an article on Dougray here from the Daily Mail as well. Finally BEHOLD IN GLORIOUS LARGE SIZE HERE VIA MY FLICKR
THE NEW POSTER for New Town Killers, with a fabulous pic of Alastair-wall paper anyone? :)
New Town Killers will be released next week.

Looking Beyond Labels with Dougray Scott

Today I want to look beyond the normal parameters of this blog, writing here from my comfy spot on the cough to write about those who are not in a comfortable place, about a subject that more often than not we do not give any attention too: Refugees. In my past Ive spoken to, videoed, edited and posted stories about those who have been profoundly affected by war, done my job, then head to the bar and forgotten all about it. I watch their stories on the news and click turn off the tv. Always wished I could do more; maybe today even if we watch for one minute something good can happen. So right, no more preaching or ranting, just want to applaud Scottish actor Dougray Scott (New Town Killers) for his efforts in supporting the UK Red Cross, as they have launched Refugee week, taking place June 15-21, as an attempt to "look beyond the ‘refugee’ label. The campaign also seeks to promote the positive contribution refugees make to life in the UK." I join in this effort, and will be lending my support and changing my Twitter status as well. You can learn more about the effort in the video below or by going to Lookbeyondthelabel.org

Thanks Sinead!

New Town Killers-The Story

Almost one month ago to the date, I posted that New Town Killers, directed by Richard Jobson and starring Dougray Scott and Sigma's own Alastair Mackenzie, had been rated 15 in the UK and several posts on it coming out in June. Got another google alert the other day, and it had the same thing, so I ignored it-mistake! LOL. For as I was reading the Gael Movies blog, he posted the rating from the other day but noted there was a release date added by the BBFC of June 12. (Thanks Alan!)Not certain how certain that is lol, but at least that is a specific date for now.

I took a look on the BBFC site and also saw now too that in addition to the rating for the film and what looks like the DVD, there is something called
"New Town Killers-The story [additional material]"

Running 30 minutes and 45 seconds in length, this also was rated 15.
Not sure if this is the DVD bonus features or a special to air on say film 4 or something but it will feature clips from the movie as well as a behind the scenes feature with only DOUGRAY SCOTT and James Pearson listed WHERE IS ALASTAIRS NAME! Holy crap I will be pissed, actually more hugely disappointed than anything really, if they don't include Al. Not sure if he just prefers not to be in the spotlight, doing press or stuff like this, but I can attest his many and I do mean MANY fans will be sorely disappointed if there isnt at least a brief interview with him or shots of him at work. LOL so there :P I know the director Richard Jobson has loads of behind the scenes stills including Al on his website, so I am hoping this is just an oversite or something. bleh. Anyway, features as follows:

00:19:30:02 NEW TOWN KILLERS - THE STORY (BEHIND THE SCENES)
00:03:40:06 (THE PROPOSAL) (FILM CLIP)
00:01:21:11 (THE LIST GAME) (FILM CLIP)
00:01:16:19 (THE TUNNEL) (FILM CLIP)
00:03:11:16 (THE ROOF CHASE) (FILM CLIP)

New Town Killers Update: Festival News, New Stills and Proof of Quality Film work being done in Scotland

There is news today that lucky viewers in France will get to see New Town Killers starring Alastair Mackenzie and Dougray Scott next week, as word has it that the film is entered in competition at the Beaune Cognac International Thriller Festival.
This festival runs April 1-5, with more info on this gorgeous area of Central France, here.

As a follow to the post below of sorts, there is of course superb film work coming out of Scotland as witnessed by Sigma Films (David Mackenzie in particular) and others such as Richard Jobson who directed NTK. One person who always contributes mightily to these quality films are the cinematographers, one in particular being Simon Dennis.

Today, via his official public website, we can see some truly spectacular examples of this fine quality work in Scottish films. Mr. Dennis served as second unit on the recent Sigma Films production of Hallam Foe, where he also shot that fabulous Hallam Foe teaser trailer directed by Colin Kennedy. Simon Dennis also served as DoP on David Mackenzie's "Last Great Wilderness." At this link you can see some great stills as well as clips of Sigma's own ALASTAIR MACKENZIE at work in the film.

In addition, Simon Dennis has done some groundbreaking work with director Richard Jobson. Notably he shot the GORGEOUS AWoman in Winter, which starred dear wonderful JAMIE SIVES. Ack, sooooo beautiful, I adore this actor gah lol-OLLIE GO HERE NOW, check out these stills, clips and montages of Jamie at work this lovely unique film of Mr. Jobson's.

Finally, we have a treat as there are new stills and wonderful looks from New Town Killers, where you can see quality stills of Dougray Scott and Alastair-note this still with the breath in the cold, the shadows on the walls. Also look how he captured them in the nightclub-look at Dougray's face! beautiful work all which just reinforces in my opinion the crucial and vital nature of continued proper funding for films like NTK and future films from Sigma to continued being made in Scotland. You can read more about the work Simon Dennis and Richard Jobson did shooting New Town Killers here in this article from Sony.

New Town Killers

Already premiered at the prestigious London Film Festival, this is an edgy action film shot by ex-punk lead singer Richard Jobson. Set on the gritty streets of Edinburgh, it traces the life of teenager Sean Kelly (James Anthony Pearson) and his sister Alice (Liz White) as they struggle to avoid debt collectors and meet mysterious strangers. Described by critics as an “ambitious and kinetic thriller, a tension-packed joyride”, it is set for a cinema release early this year.

Film City Glasgow Article and More in Scottish Screen Feature

In addition to the awesome new info on Rounding Up Donkeys (as noted below) there is a plethora of new information contained in the new Scottish Screen feature: Made in Scotland.

Listen up Stone of Destiny and Dougray Scott fans! There are a host of new photos from the Stone of Destiny film (including BILLY BOYD and Robert Carlyle pics) as well as two new articles on New Town Killers, one with the director Richard Jobson and a separate feature with actor Dougray Scott. Download and enjoy via this link (PDF)
EDIT: Early wire photos of the Scottish Screen reception at Cannes today are online, and no luck on ANY pics of Dougray, nor Tilda nor anyone from Sigma *w0e* The director of Stone, Charles Smith seems to be there, as the EIFF director Hannah McGill, along with that couple that risked so much to make that Outpost film, and one or two other names I recognised but still-boo! c'omeon press corp dont let me down lol.

As for this dork, I was absolutely thrilled to see a feature on FILM CITY GLASGOW as well as piece on the other Trifecta of S at the film base: Savalas Sound.

The Film City Glasgow article contains a new interview with Operations manager Tiernan Kelly. In the article, which you can see on flickr here and here, Mr. Kelly discusses Sigma Films and their sense of international cooperation and desire to bring people and film makers together in one flourishing hub in Scotland. The facilities at FCG are one example of how Glasgow is endeavoring to try and create a unified center or 'hub' for a range of film makers from all over Scotland and the world frankly, to come and use their center, such as what is being done with Valhalla Rising (there is also a brief article on funding and filming in a country outside your own in Scotland)

New Feature on "New Town Killers"

Scotland on Sunday has posted a new feature on actor Dougray Scott, who discusses his role in the upcoming "New Town Killers" which also stars actor Alastair Mackenzie of Sigma Films. In this lengthy feature, Mr. Scott does mention his high opinion of New Town Killer director Richard Jobson ("He is one of the most knowledgeable directors I've worked with in Britain) and there is also discussion on filming for the movie. Quotage:

"He is in high spirits today, he assures me, and that is largely thanks to being in Edinburgh. He is filming Richard Jobson's upcoming film, New Town Killers, a thriller also starring Alastair Mackenzie, in which they play a couple of reckless, mercenary private bankers preying on those less fortunate than them just for the fun of it. A crew member tells me that, the night before, they shot a scene in which Scott's character had to beat someone up. Everyone was genuinely terrified.

For Scott, the best part of filming around Edinburgh, in areas including Leith, the New Town, Calton Hill and Muirhouse, has been seeing a city he knows so well in a different light. Later, I go on set to watch him in a scene on the rain-lashed, wind-whipped roof of a disused building off Princes Street. He gestures towards the view of the Old Town and the Castle and says: "See? I bet you've never seen the city from up here before."

Side note: Having never been to Scotland, I do not know quite what areas of the city they are talking about in the previous quote, but I remember Colin had posted several photos of his filming on rooftops of Edinburgh for Hallam Foe, that showed the absolutely beautiful buildings and landscape of the city like the one below, which is one of my favorite.

This feature shows a fairly reflective actor, not quite the image you think of when you watch him on Desperate Housewives. He also speaks quite glowingly of his wife, actress Claire Forlani, who starred in Hallam Foe. The paper notes: "He is surprisingly open about his marriage, and is clearly smitten with Forlani, whom he was introduced to by a director friend two and a half years ago. She has already been to visit him in Edinburgh once during the five-week shoot and is coming again. "She is extraordinary," he says. "I've never met anyone like her. She's really special, you know… to me." He wasn't sure he wanted to marry again but "it came along and felt right. We have a great, really healthy relationship and a real understanding of each other's psyches and needs. She's incredibly supportive."

New Town Killers continues in production in Edinburgh, and is due for release sometime next year.

Feature on Alastair Mackenzie Film "New Town Killers"

Well this is a banner day for me, with three entries in one go-whats a fan girl to do lol!

The Scotsman has a new feature online (I think for their Sunday paper?) focusing on New Town Killers, starring Alastair Mackenzie and Dougray Scott. The interview contains many new quotes from the director of the film, Richard Jobson, who describes the film as "It's pretty dark," he nods. "It's about two forms of social invisibility. On the one hand you have kids who have fallen off the social radar then the other end of the spectrum of social invisibility are these hedge fund managers who control our economy." Mr. Jobson also mentions working with actor Alastair Mackenzie (who is of course, a main force at Sigma Films) when he describes the character Al is portraying as "so nihilistic, his view of the world is just a game," says Richard. "He sets people up to hunt them down. Dougray is playing him with an incredible charm and luxuriousness that you kind of like him until you really see what he does."

There is bonus great news on the film side of things, as the director says New Town Killers has been picked up by Warner Brothers (oho!!!) and reveals production has been ongoing in the city of Edinburgh recently as "the cast and crew have been enduring sub-zero temperatures on the top of former bank buildings on St Andrew Square."

Stating something all his fan like me have long suspected, Richard Jobson says working with the former Monarch of the Glen star on this otherwise serious movie has been enjoyable noting "Alastair Mackenzie is also a very funny guy, so we've been having a blast."

Finally, Richard Jobson gives away a hint of a release timeframe (oh no lolol) when he discussing his involvement with the Circle charity (ALWAYS glad to see mentions of charity work which makes a big difference!) and he says that a friendship with the current UK Prime Minister may lead to him attending the" premiere of New Town Killers when it is released early next year."
