Photos of Gillian Berrie from "Perfect Sense" Screening at Glasgow Film Theatre

Here's something that cheered me considerably: new photos and a report from last month's screening of "Perfect Sense" at the launch of Cinema City at Glasgow Film Theatre. In the photo here---> is Gillian Berrie, co-founder of Sigma Films producer extraordinaire and a person I admire very much. I also really like that banner!
Many more pics can be found right here on flickr and a brief report of the event here.

Perfect Time to Get Fired Up about Perfect Sense!

Loads of "Perfect Sense" news to catch up on! (sorry battered body/brain are slowly getting there and been a bit distracted by Sir Jory lol, but its all good and go from now on no worries)

The Seattle International Film Festival opens tonight and tickets for the 21st May screening of "Perfect Sense" are going quickly. It's not yet confirmed, but there seems to be a possibility that star Ewan McGregor may make an appearance at this screening (unclear from this SIFF news post on the guests hmm; it sure looks like it, woot!), but tickets for the special tribute to Ewan are now sold out! Take heart, for if you can't make the 21st showing, plenty of tickets yet remain for the 25 May showing at the Seattle festival still remain-CLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS. Enjoy!

Be sure to check out the new FACEBOOK PAGE FOR PERFECT SENSE!

Also in the other major news of the week, TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE FOR THE UK PREMIERE of "Perfect Sense" at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Available right now for Filmhouse members, these sales open to the general public tomorrow (20th); more information can be found right here at this link. The film is premiering at the Cameo in Edinburgh 18 JUNE, then again the next night on the 19th. ENJOY ENJOY ENJOY! Arrow Films is distributing the film in the UK later this year, with IFC to handle the US-can.not.wait!

Two other cool related bits of news: Screen Daily confirms that yes indeed, Sigma Films' own GILLIAN BERRIE will take part in a special panel at the Edinburgh Film festival next month, in an event titled "Co-productions: why the British should love Europe" Absolutely! Sending good thoughts to Gillian and all who are lucky enough to attend this event.

Finally, Sigma continues to prove they are cutting edge filmmakers as they move into taking a larger role with the distribution of their films. Per the great folks at Creative Scotland, we learn that Sigma will take on some of the marketing for the release of both "Perfect Sense" and "You Instead," working closely with their distributors. Quotage:

Sigma Releasing: One of Scotland’s most prolific film production companies has created a new integrated business model which will allow them to co-release its films in the UK. Creative Scotland investment will allow them to contribute to the print and advertising costs of the UK release and allow it to reinvest the revenue generated from distribution across the range of its film activities.

Creative Scotland is investing £250,000 into Sigma Releasing.

Gillian Berrie, Director, Sigma Films said: ‘It’s great to have the resources to collaborate with Icon on You Instead and Arrow on Perfect Sense to support the UK releases and embrace and explore new distribution models and strategies.’

Also too the awesome Savalas Sound is getting a boost as they too will get some help from Creative Scotland:

La Belle Allée/Savalas Sound Post Equity Fund: A fund to allow sound post-production facility, Savalas to offer equity investment to attract international production to Scotland and discounts for locally produced feature films. Savalas is the only Dolby Premier studio outside of London and this fund would allow the company to attract large-scale projects and lead to the company becoming an equity stakeholder in the projects they invest in.

Creative Scotland is investing £125,000 in La Belle Allée/Savalas Sound Post Equity Fund.

Karen Smyth, Producer, La Belle Allée:‘La Belle Allée are delighted to be involved in the creation and running of a post-production equity investment fund, alongside Scotland’s leading sound post production facility, Savalas. We look forward to attracting high quality projects to Scotland, as well offering domestic production world-class facilities at an affordable price.’

The new initiatives will help inform Creative Scotland’s future film investment policy. The organisation also recently announced an increase in its film investment funds, bringing the total available for development and production of film and television in Scotland this year to £3 million.

New Report: Kevin McKidd to Star in Colin Kennedy's "Atlantic Bridge"

More fantastic news today, this in the form of news regarding Sigma's own Colin Kennedy and his first feature film "Atlantic Bridge." As readers here already know, Colin has been working hard developing this film, written by the excellent Andrea Gibb (Sigma's hit Dear Frankie) Today, Brian from the Daily Record was kind enough to let me know of his new interview with acclaimed Scottish actor Kevin McKidd (current star of ABC's mega hit Grey Anatomy). In the interview, Kevin brought us some wonderful news that he hopes to star in Atlantic Bridge! AWESOME! Quotage:

"I'm hoping to do a low budget film for Sigma Films with Andrea Gibb, who I did Afterlife with and who has written an amazing script - like The Big Chill but in Scotland. "

Colin has confirmed that yes indeed the script is done, and they are working hard on getting all the pieces in place (financing etc) before possibly SHOOTING THIS SUMMER! FINGERS CROSSED this will work out, just excellent news for Sigma and Colin Kennedy fans! You can learn more about Colin via the website for his multi award-winning short film I LOVE LUCI, here.

Possible Description of Colin Kennedy's "Atlantic Bridge"

As things move into the distribution phase for several of the newest films from Sigma of late ("Donkeys"-possible DVD, "Perfect Sense"- in cinemas everywhere this fall, and "You Instead" -new trailer hopefully still yet to come, sorry for those who have been waiting with me) time to turn our attention to the new projects in the works. One of which is the first feature film from award-winning director Colin Kennedy. He is at work on a piece called "Atlantic Bridge" with acclaimed screenwriter Andrea Gibb, she who wrote the excellent "Dear Frankie" for Sigma.

A tentative description of AB has now surfaced online which describes the film as a "drama" about "Three couples descend on their old party haunt for a reunion to discover life is even more complex than it seems in your late-thirties."hmmm a twist on the Big chill maybe, but dunno about how accurate this is. Regardless, seems very cool indeed and I CANT WAIT!
To learn more about Colin and his award-winning short film I Love Luci, be sure to visit the official site here, and the Facebook page for it here.

Sigma Films can also be found on the web via their website here at this link, and at their official Facebook page, here.

As its now April and time is springing forward lol, given the huge and often overwhelming amount of news that happened in the first few months, will try and do a recap for each of the films/segments this weekend. Regardless, its going to be a HUGE summer/fall for Sigma on screens EVERYWHERE! :)

Icon Films to Distribute You Instead to UK Theatres

Rock rock this friday rocks!! Not only is Sigma celebrating their 15th birthday, and the premiere tonight of their latest film at GFF, but now comes word that You Instead will be hitting UK theatres later this year. Screen Daily reports that Icon Films will distribute David Mackenzie's latest motion picture!
Great news...can THE US BE FAR BEHIND???
Quotage of interest from Screen Daily on distribution deal:

For the UK, Icon Film Distribution has taken on the film. “Icon have shown an unrivalled level of passion and enthusiasm for this film from day one. They absolutely understand how to make audiences fall in love with it and we are very excited to be working with them to make the film a huge success in the UK,” said Stephen Kelliher, Head Of Sales & Marketing at Bankside Films.

Also, Wild Bunch struck a multi-territory deal for rights in France, Benelux, Spain and Germany.

Other deals were done with: Australia/New Zealand (Hopscotch), CIS and Baltics (Volga), Hong Kong (Golden Scene), Israel (Shani), Poland (Vivarto), South Korea (Pan), Thailand (Sahamonkolfilm), Turkey (Umut Sanat) and airlines (Jaguar).

Backed by BBC Films, Creative Scotland and Bankside Films, You Instead was produced by Gillian Berrie, Mackenzie’s partner in Glasgow-based production company Sigma Films. “The reaction to You Instead has been incredible,” Kelliher added. “From the first screening, buyers fell in love with what is a highly original piece of filmmaking. David’s film offers audiences an unexpected love story in the very real setting of a live music festival. It is a feel good film which had everyone leaving the theatre on a high.”

Icon UK MD (Distribution) Ian Dawson added: ”You Instead authentically captures the music festival experience like no other film has before it, whilst the central performances make it something truly special. This is a love story for a whole new generation. We are delighted to be working with the Sigma team to bring this film to audiences in the UK.”

'Miss It At Your Peril': You Instead Rocking the Film World in Berlin & Glasgow

Excitement is certainly building before the sold-out premiere of You Instead at the Glasgow Film Festival on the 25th. Witness: the newest film from Sigma is already making some serious waves as Bankside Films screened the movie for buyers this week at the Berlin Film Festival. Latest word has it that its going down like a storm among the buyers with great feedback and interest. Of course as only rock and roll will have it, the showing of the film got off to a bit of a turbulent start and involved some quick actions on the part of Team Sigma (gooooo Colin! :))
Per the official Glasgow Film Festival blog:

You Instead was screened to potential buyers on Thursday night but only just. A corrupted file meant that a member of the Sigma team galloped to the rescue, boarding a plane and hand-delivering a replacement to the waiting crowd of buyers in Berlin.

Fortunately, they all waited the necessary forty minutes and, in the words of producer Gillian Berrie, 'the response was fantastic. You Instead rocked Berlin.' Makes us all even prouder that the Glasgow Film Festival has been chosen to host the home town world premiere of You Instead on February 25th. The film will then have its North American premiere in March at the incredibly cool SXSW Festival in Texas.

The Guardian is also reporting on the upcoming screening of You Instead at the Glasgow Film Festival, noting over the weekend the following (see clipping as well)

Perhaps Edinburgh should start looking over its shoulder at "the fastest-growing film event in the UK". But Scotland's big enough for the both of them, for now. This one's almost too big for itself, as evidenced by the mini-festivals within it: a promising music and film festival, a shorts festival, horror strand FrightFest. And that's before you get to the international selection, the Meryl Streep and Ginger Rogers retrospectives, etc. Best of all is the healthy amount of British, and especially Scottish talent around. David "Young Adam" Mackenzie returns with rockers' romance You Instead, Natalie Press leads Hebridean family thriller Island, Ken Loach introduces Route Irish, and his son Jim makes his directing debut with Oranges And Sunshine.

Be sure to check out the official You Instead Facebook page for exclusive and fun contests, first looks from the film (including a new photo of stars Luke Treadaway and Matt Baynton), and dont forget their official Twitter for more! For as the preview on the Glasgow Film Festival reads on You Instead ..."Shot in a swirl of energy during the five days of last Summer's T In The Park it is like a funny, frisky, endearing collision between the Before Sunset/Before Sunrise indie spirit of Richard Linklater and the fizzing energy of those Beatles films that Richard Lester made in the Swinging Sixties. Miss it at your peril.

Awesome!

For more on the making of the film, be sure to check out this earlier interview from the Scotsman, where director David Mackenzie discusses his groundbreaking 5 day shoot on this motion picture at the T in the Park Festival:

It has a dynamic young British cast headed by Luke Treadaway and Natalia Tena (Tonks from the Harry Potter movies), and could be Mackenzie's happiest film to date. It is certainly his fastest. Sigma producer Gillian Berrie pulled out all the stops to get clearance to film at T in the Park for the crowd scenes.

Then Mackenzie decided that "wasn't challenging enough" and suggested they try to shoot the whole movie there.

The film team based themselves in a compound between the Main Stage and the NME Stage, contending with the ever-present throb of bass and the armies of wellies marching from one stage to another. It was exhausting but exhilarating. Mackenzie's voice fills with excitement when he talks about it.

"It's a great method. There's something about throwing everyone into that environment that unifies everyone. Somehow forcing oneself into a live environment and shooting very quickly is a liberation. You don't have control of the environment but as long as you're able to think on your feet and everyone is cool and able to roll with the punches, you can get incredible stuff."

The poetic cinematography of Mackenzie's earlier films hasn't disappeared in the frenzy: he describes a shot filmed at dawn where hundreds of seagulls swirl in the sky. "It was really visually poetic and magical. To begin with, I think we all thought the whole thing was going to be impossible, but it got better and better. The opportunities just kept on opening up, and we were more fighting fit to take advantage of them."

However, there were also moments when it rained, or when the entire film crew got boxed in by the arrival of Jay-Z's entourage, or the 1,500-strong crowd they had arranged as extras headed off en masse to catch a burlesque show. "You've got nearly 100,000 people out having a good time, not interested in having us getting in their way. That was kind of interesting."

The trade-off was that they were able to capture the atmosphere, energy and spontaneity of a live music festival.

"What's nice is the lightness of the material mixing with the grittiness of the way we shot it. It is able to avoid being too fluffy, which makes me a lot more comfortable about it. What I hope you get from the movie is the sense that you're there. Watching it is making me want to go and hang out at music festivals. I hope we get free tickets next year. We might get to see some bands!"

Perfectly Scottish: Sigma Films Hit Sundance!

As we know, the world premiere of David Mackenzie's latest film "Perfect Sense" will take place in a few days on Monday, January 24 at 9:30pm (MT) There is a large group from Sigma Films there to help kick off this event, so be sure to follow the Sigma Films twitter where Scotland is being represented not with just this wonderful film, but all around town :D

UPDATE: As seen on the front page of the official Sundance Film Festival website :D

And look at this one... I recognize that man in the puffy parka! :D :D

There is already a slew of press about the trailer for Perfect Sense with Ewan McGregor and Eva Green of course, and a few others of note include a piece from THR who says that Perfect Sense is one of ten films most likely to be sold (lets hope so!!!) Also director David Mackenzie has done another interview (rather odd one imo) where he is quoted on the film as follows:

"I guess I wanted to tell a love story, but conventional stories are often being told," said Mackenzie, 44. "There's something very interesting in the way this story happens, the way the couple comes together and how they deal with it. It felt very out of the ordinary, very interesting. It's a love story for extreme times."

Mackenzie has had a film at Sundance once before, "Spread," starring Ashton Kutcher, in 2009. Work commitments kept Mackenzie from attending, so this will be his first Sundance trip.

"I am very much looking forward to it," he said. "I am intrigued to see how people react to the film. This will be the first time it is seen by more than 10 people, who are friends of the film. Obviously, I am a little bit nervous."

But the director has high hopes for Sundance, including drawing interest from film distributors."It's one of the high-profile films," Mackenzie said. "It's a good festival to release a film into the world. There are quite a lot of people there. It's a profile event, and I'm excited to have been asked. It's a great launching pad for the movie."

Mackenzie said he hopes Sundance audiences have an emotional reaction to his emotional film.

"I hope they hug their neighbors," he said.

I WOULD LOVE TO HUG YOU DAVID and everyone at Sigma, so badly wish to have been there :((( but thrilled for the whole crew who is there. Stay Tuned to their Twitter and more here when available.

Perfect Good Sense: Great Year Ahead for Sigma!

With a new year comes the hope wishes and dreams of many good things, including those for a wonderful year ahead for the readers of this blog.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the time you've taken to stop by, read, and perhaps learn a bit about the people and work written about here. I hope its been of some use. I try very hard to keep up with Sigma who are so brilliant so original and so worth learning about; I'm most certainly not perfect and want to do so much more with this site this year!, but I hope there's been something that's been worthwhile. Same holds for Jamie Sives-I love you Jamie, I will back you and support you and never stop spreading the word about you and your talent! I hope many more people will continue to follow his work, for he's got another great year ahead. Both he and the truly outstanding people of Sigma have been most MOST generous with their time, patience, and support. I love them all, Colin and Brian esp. rock my world, have for years, and will always have my continued support admiration and well.. I have no shame in saying that I wish only continued good things for them in the year and years to come.

Most of all, the many private mails and comments have made THE difference-thank you from the bottom of my heart. Esp to those who follow on Twitter, new friends made, and old ones retained. A big hug and thanks again to the fellow fansites and to Ollie and Helge (I miss you!) xxxx
Cheers to you all for a healthy happy and joyful year ahead!!!!

It surely is going to be a wonderful year ahead for Sigma Films! At least three films will be released, the first is of course David Mackenzie's Perfect Sense, which will premiere in just a few weeks at the Sundance Film Festival. They've released David's statement on the movie, which reads as follows:

The film is talking about day-to-day things. It’s about how people cope with terrible changes rather than the disaster itself. That’s one of the things I found amazing and challenging about it. We agreed on creating a poetic version of the story rather than a big splashy special effects-version of it. You could have re-designed it as an 80 million Hollywood movie with lots of special effects and bombast, if you wanted to do. But we were very conscious that we didn’t want to do that. We decided to be low-key and to maximize the micro-cosmic, to keep it minimal, to pull it back from all the tropes and tricks. To push the envelope of the romance – push the genre inwards not outwards. There was an instinct that told me not to be too grandiose about it, because the story is grandiose enough in itself.

Other key things:
Colin Kennedy's I LOVE LUCI short continues to do well-did you see the great news on the official site? Luci will be touring this year and possible distribution is in the works-AWESOME! Colin wrote "...Luci will continue to tour the globe in the festival circuit next year with Candella Films as part of a selection of the best films to emerge from the UK in 2010 and we also hope to announce an international distribution deal in the very near future."

HECK YES!

Plus there is Citadel, You Instead, and much more in the works! Jamie Sives will be SINGING at the Eilidh Brown Memorial Concert too on January 15 (TICKETS NOW SOLD OUT AWESOME CONGRATS. PLEASE PLEASE IF YOU ARE GOING VIDEO /PHOTOS PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE :D) Plus he has GoT coming to a screen near you soon and the One Day film (lolz again to the beard) Who knows what goodies he has up his sleeve; whatever it is its going to be great! :))

Stay well, stay healthy be happy and stay tuned please, many good and great things lie ahead!

Photos from Filming of Ciaran Foy's "Citadel"

Production is nearing an end on Sigma Film's newest effort CITADEL and luckily today we have some new photos to show you.

First, many thanks to Blinder Films who have released in glorious high res the photo we saw here earlier of star Aneurin Barnard in his role as Tommy for the new joint Sigma/Blinder Films production "Citadel." Excellent!

Then, again via the personal blog of DoP Tim Fleming we can see some additional and very dramatic shots of Aneurin Barnard from the film, from scenes that take place in the mysterious tunnel and facing those demon child hunters that threaten the main character. Top notch work; this film just looks to be fantastic, can't wait!

Finally, thanks as always to the hard working fantastic crew, Mr Fleming has also posted a pic of what seems to be the camera crew. Prop man Paul Lambie also has tweeted quite a bit during the production (including some great twitter photos you gotta check out yourself here), and noted they are currently over in Dublin for a few days on the film as well.

Citadel is due for release next year.

Sigma Begins Filming on Ciaran Foy's "Citadel"

A follow up on something first reported here months ago, I am thrilled to update with word that Sigma Films have officially begun filming on their newest project "Citadel." Yay!

In truly an international project, Ciaran Foy directs the latest movie which is described as a horror film of sorts, and features a wonderful cast, including rising star Welsh actor Aneurin Barnard in the lead role of Tommy, long time Sigma star & acclaimed Scottish actor James Cosmo as The Priest, the beautiful and talented Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku as Marie, and making his motion picture debut is young Jake Wilson (12) in his first role, that of Danny. A joint Scottish and Irish production, this film is produced by Katie Holly of Blinder Films, and Sigma Films' very own Brian Coffey, with the ever fabulous Gillian Berrie as Executive Producer. Both are producers on the rise and this is good news indeed for this feature film.

Summary of the film is as follows:
Citadel tells the story of widower and single father Tommy Cowley, a man inflicted with chronic agoraphobia since the day his wife was attacked. He was unable to protect her. He lives in Edenstown, the council estate from hell. Here he finds himself terrorized by a gang of syringe wielding feral children, who are intent on taking his baby daughter. With the help of a kind Nurse and a renegade Priest, Tommy learns the nightmarish truth surrounding these hooded children. He also learns that to be free of his fears, he must finally face the demons of his past and enter the one place he fears the most - The abandoned Tower block known as the Citadel..

Shooting on Citadel is now officially underway, with three weeks ahead RIGHT NOW in Glasgow and one week in Dublin. Citadel is based out of FILM CITY GLASGOW. Citadel is backed from the fine folks at the Irish Film Board and Creative Scotland.
Other Info:
*Citadel will be shot by Tim Fleming (Academy Award nominated Live action short The Door,) who filmed the most excellent (Academny Award winning) "Once" movie. Wow!!! Be sure to check out his demo reel here, well worth it I assure you!

*Wunmi Mosaku appeared in One Night in Emergency w/Jamie Sives and Kevin McKidd as the nurse too (save this factoid for points in the six degrees of Sigma Films game ;)

*ALL COMMENTS /REPORTS/PHOTOS WELCOME (annoy totally fine!) If you are so inclined PLEASE SEND IN YOUR PICS/UPDATES and I will be more than happy to post your reports for all us to enjoy!
Stay tuned, more Sigma goodness coming soon! :)

This is NO mere Loch Ness sighting, no indeed, its the real thing - a sad strange large yet cuddley Donkey, looking for ...a home, a kind soul to pay him heed, or... an audience ;)
